Human on the Inside with Rebel Sport’s Ben Anderson

Human on the Inside. We’re big believers in the power of human skills. But don’t just take our word for it - the evidence for excellence powered by human (‘soft’) skills is everywhere! In this engaging, ever-enlightening series, we speak with industry leaders, innovators and game-changers to learn a little about their personal career journeys, and how human-led strategies, philosophies and cultures are proving a force for good in their working worlds …

Maxme: Welcome Ben, and thanks for stepping into the #SuccessIsHuman Spotlight.

You’re Head of eCommerce at Rebel Sport. In 1 sentence (ok, we’ll give you 3), what does this kind of work entail?

Ben Anderson: I am responsible for leading digital strategy and eCommerce initiatives. This includes overseeing teams responsible for website development, digital marketing, trading, and ensuring that we are delivering a seamless online shopping experience and driving sustainable revenue growth.

M: A passionate digital executive with almost two decades’ experience on the CV, your impressive career kicked off in finance. It all started in an Accounts Receivable role for 12 months with Nestle in 2006 followed by a similar role with Belgravia Leisure the year after.

In late 2007 you commenced an impressive 10 year stint with leading high performance sports brand 2XU. Initially joining the business as Finance Manager, you later progressed to Commercial Manager before stepping up as Global Head of eCommerce for the final two years of your 2XU tenure.

In 2018 it was time for a change, and you headed to Accent Group as Head of eCommerce (Trade). After two years you were appointed Group Head of eCommerce - a role you held for a further two years.

That takes us to your current role with Rebel Sport, where you’ve been for almost two years now.

How does all this speak to your personal purpose and what drives you as an individual?

BA: My passion has always been for growth and learning. I thrive on new challenges and enjoy collaborating with diverse individuals. I've found a deep sense of purpose in helping students discover the exciting world of eCommerce and digital. I have recently joined RMIT to help promote pathways to enter into digital roles.

While my career is important, my family is my top priority. I believe in striking a balance between professional aspirations and personal life, especially as a parent to my daughter.

M: Tell us a little about your personal education pathway/s - what led you to where you are now? How closely do your formal qualifications match your current career?

BA: While I was unsure of my passions in school, my aptitude for numbers and strong academic performance led me to pursue a Bachelor of Business majoring in Accounting. I believe that while following passions is often emphasised, one's skills and strengths can also be a powerful guide to success.

Inspired by my father, I became a CPA and utilised this qualification for the first decade of my career in various finance roles. Over time, I realised that while I enjoyed my work, my strengths and skills had evolved and led to my transition into eCommerce.

Although my current role doesn't directly require my accounting qualifications, they have provided a valuable foundation for my success.

M: If you could share one piece of career advice to your 21 year old self it would be ...

BA: Don't miss this chance. Say Yes!!! Take advantage of your independence to explore the world and your career path.

M: Maximising the potential of individuals, communities and businesses through the power of human skills is the reason Maxme exists. Can you tell us a little about the role and / or value of human skills in your industry right now?

BA: Before I start any business, I always think about what future success looks like. My ultimate goal is to make myself redundant by developing the next internal candidate to be my successor. It takes great courage and effort to ensure you're cultivating the next generation of leaders.

I invest my time in understanding team members' passions and the areas they wish to explore. I also remain mindful that every team benefits from both internal and external mentors. Sometimes, outside perspectives are crucial for grasping broader market opportunities.

The greatest thrill for me is seeing former team members run large businesses and teams on their own.

M: Self Awareness sets the critical foundation for all Maxme learning experiences. With that said … What's your strongest trait / personal superpower?

BA: My strongest trait as a strategic thinker with a knack for problem-solving. This superpower enables me to analyse complex situations, develop effective solutions, and make data-driven decisions. Ultimately getting shit done regardless of it you know all the answers.

I would also say my competitive spirit drives me to continuously strive for excellence and seek out new challenges. This competitive edge fuels my motivation to deliver exceptional results and pushes me to be the best that I can be.

M: And on the flip side, what’s one human / ‘soft’ skill you’ve had to really work on improving over the course of your career?

BA: Reflection is essential for personal and professional growth. It involves taking time, individually or as a team, to celebrate achievements and learn from opportunities.

I also believe in the importance of being present in the moment. Whether at work or with family, I strive to give my full attention and energy to the task at hand

These are two things that I have also battled with over my life.

M: If you could share one piece of career advice with recent Uni graduates or candidates keen to work in the field of eCommerce or retail, what would it be?

BA: Embrace a growth mindset and a passion for continuous learning. The eCommerce landscape is constantly evolving, so staying updated on industry trends, technologies, and best practices is crucial. Seek out opportunities to develop new skills, whether through online courses, workshops, or industry events. A willingness to learn and adapt will set you apart and help you thrive in this dynamic field.

M: You’ve been granted approval to add one University graduate to your business, but have 100 applicants, all with outstanding academic results. How do you find your perfect candidate - what are you looking for?

BA: Ambition, drive and the ability to articulate how they would think about solving problems.

M: In the words of John Dewey, “education is not preparation for life, education is life itself.”

What’s next on your #learning agenda?

BA: I'm about to start a new role as Head of Loyalty and Member Engagement at Rebel. So this will be another opportunity to learn something new and add to my overall skill sets.
