Maxme: Welcome Alanna, and thanks for stepping into the #SuccessIsHuman Spotlight! 

You’re the Founder & CEO of Women in Safety, Director & Principal Consultant at The Safety Team, Partner at the Hunter Safety Awards. 

In 1 sentence (ok, we’ll give you 3), what do these roles entail?

Alanna Ball: I would say as a whole, I ensure collaboration and conversations are had across health and safety to ensure people can bring their whole self to work. Whether that be through our membership in Women in Safety, consulting with clients in the Safety Team and celebrating success with the Hunter Safety Awards!

M: Whilst you established Women in Safety over 6 years ago, your career path has traversed private and public organisations, and covered environmental, health, workplace and organisational safety. 

How does all this work speak to your personal purpose and what drives you as an individual?

AB: At the outset of my career, I found myself immersed in the dynamic field of human resources. However, as I navigated through the intricacies of organisational dynamics, it dawned on me—I was drawn towards a deeper mission: to facilitate an environment where individuals could authentically express themselves within the workplace.

Driven by this newfound sense of purpose, I made a deliberate transition into the realm of health and safety. In this domain, I am steadfast in my belief that fostering an environment where individuals feel not only physically secure but also emotionally and psychologically supported is paramount. I truly believe that such comprehensive support for our people is instrumental in fostering operational success.

M: Tell us a little about your personal education pathway/s - what led you to where you are now? How closely do your formal qualifications match your current career?

AB: I actually started my formal studies in Psychology, however as a 17 year old fresh out of school, it was NOT for me! I have completed a Bachelor of Business majoring in Human Resources, a Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety and a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Law. I am also currently (trying) to do my MBA! I actually love my formal qualifications as I’m often advising clients on the work health and safety laws and how we tie that into existing policies and procedures from both a WHS context and a HR context.

M: If you could share one piece of career advice to your 21 year old self it would be ...

AB: Always stay curious. You don’t have to have it all solved now and you can continue to be curious to new things daily. Be kind to yourself!

M: Maximising the potential of individuals, communities and businesses through the power of human skills is the reason Maxme exists. Can you tell us a little about the role and / or value of human skills in your workplace right now?

AB: I'm a big believer in teamwork and how building relationships leads to better results when we work together. I truly think that when people connect on a personal level, it makes collaboration smoother and more enjoyable. So, I'm all about creating those connections and seeing how they can make our projects even more successful.

M: Self Awareness sets the critical foundation for all Maxme learning experiences. With that said … what’s your strongest trait / personal super power?

AB: My superpower lies in my interpersonal skills. I excel at building connections, fostering teamwork, and nurturing relationships. I firmly believe that collaboration enhances learning and drives success in any endeavour.

M: And on the flip side, what’s one human / ‘soft’ skill you’ve had to really work on improving over the course of your career?

AB: One area I've dedicated effort to improve is navigating challenging personalities, diplomatically. I've learned to handle difficult interactions with grace and professionalism, recognising the value of maintaining positive relationships even in challenging situations

M: If you could share one piece of career advice with recent Uni graduates or candidates keen to work in workplace safety, what would it be?

AB: Don’t walk the hard path alone. We’ve all been the new safety professional on site and although challenging, the role is so rewarding. Connect with your peers, find a mentor and believe in the reason you got into this role. 

M: You’ve been granted approval to add one University graduate to your team, but have 100 applicants, all with outstanding academic results. How do you find your perfect candidate - what are you looking for?

AB: Well, beyond academic smarts, I'm after someone who isn’t afraid to dive into teamwork, shows a real passion for learning, and can adapt on the fly. Oh, and killer people skills is a must! The ability to engage and connect with our people to understand their current work challenges, risks and opportunities for improvements will make an amazing addition!

M: In the words of John Dewey, “education is not preparation for life, education is life itself.” 

What’s next on your #learning agenda? 

AB: I have some more formal studies to complete, but also continuously chip away at mini learning sessions through podcasts, reading and connecting. We learn by being curious enough to ask!
